Turning pages, changing futures
Founded in Washington, D.C. in 2020, Girls and Literature (GAL) is an entirely youth-led global nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to education for girls. Through literacy programs, book donations, resource distribution, and mentorship programs, among others, we empower young women to see themselves as change-makers and leaders. Today, GAL’s impact spans four continents, with a volunteer network across 30 countries, united by a shared belief in the transformative power of education.

Our reach
South Asia, West and Central Africa, and Eastern and Southern Africa comprise of 87% of illiterate youth worldwide. In these regions, there are 4 million more illiterate girls than boys. GAL has supported 3,000 students across the world in their educational journeys, but we have work to do.
