GIRLS AND LITERATURE
Girls and Literature is a student-led, 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a mission to assist girls around the world who do not have easy access to education. We hope to give girls the opportunity to educate themselves, become leaders, and create their own change in the world.
SNAPSHOT OF OUR WORK
Girls and Literature (GAL) was founded in the Washington D.C. area and has both a domestic and international reach. In the United States, GAL has assisted Title I schools in improve student reading levels. Internationally, the organization has worked with students in Uganda, Kenya, Southern India, and Nicaragua as well as Afghan Refugees, among others. And, we are just getting started!
HOW DO WE HELP?
Our assistance primarily comes in two main forms: book shipments and read alouds. The book shipment process begins by organizing and holding book drives in community hotspots. The donations are then sent to communities both domestically and internationally. We have currently donated over 1,000 books. Girls and Literature has also held tens of read-alouds. A number of studies have shown read-alouds to be an incredibly effective method of improving a student's general literacy skill. Therefore, GAL, and its four chapters have worked to bring read-aloud services at any level and in multiple languages to communities worldwide.
